32 Understanding Mediums and Platforms

Introduction
In today’s world, the way we communicate and share information has changed dramatically due to the rise of new media. Whether you’re sending a text message, sharing a video, or attending a virtual meeting, each of these actions involves a medium and a platform. These are simple terms, yet they are highly important in how we reach out to others, share information, and interact in digital media. In this chapter, we’ll explore what these terms mean, how they differ, and why understanding them is crucial for understanding modern modes of communication.
What Are Mediums?
The term “medium” refers to the means through which communication occurs. It is what carries information from one person to another. Traditionally, mediums included face to face conversations, phone calls, and written letters. With the rise of digital media, we now have an even broader range of mediums such as social media posts, podcasts, videos, and blogs. For example, when a message is given via text message or email, the medium is written, and it is direct and instantaneous. In the case of a podcast or video, the medium requires both audio and visual aspects. The differences among mediums give way to distinct characteristics within each medium that shape and determine the manner in which the message is communicated and interpreted. It also demonstrates that throughout history, mediums of communication are adaptable and the ways of interacting vary based on the medium. Pre quarantine, many of us were accustomed to the idea of in person interviews, but now with platforms such as Zoom, these means have altered drastically. We now have our quick exchanges on social media or messaging platforms without having to necessarily interact face to face, directly with another human. With each medium comes a change in the delivery of tone, intent, and meaning.
Exercises
What is a “medium”? How does your medium choice affect the communication process? Can you think of situations where one medium might be more effective than another?
What Are Platforms?
A platform is the space or environment where communication occurs. It refers to the service, website, or app that hosts the medium. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter provide users with tools to communicate, but it is the medium-text, images, or videos-that carries the actual message. For example, Twitter is a platform that really only supports small amounts of text (tweets), whereas Instagram provides a visually-driven platform where images and short captions are used to communicate. The platform hosts the medium, but also defines how the content can be shared and interacted with.
Exercises
What is a “platform”? How do different platforms shape the communication experience? Can you think of examples of platforms that emphasize specific types of communication?
Each platform is designed for specific functionalities that promote certain types of interactions. A platform like LinkedIn, for example, is designed to maintain and develop professional communication, as it focuses on resumes, job postings, and networking. In contrast, other platforms like TikTok or YouTube are designed to emphasize video content and entertainment, which creates another kind of dynamic in the way people communicate.
Mediums and Platforms Working Together
The true power of communication in digital spaces comes forth when one realizes how mediums and platforms work together: a platform provides the environment where the communication happens, and a medium carries the content. In the case of posting a photo on Instagram, for example, the platform enables the user to visually share something with others, and through the medium of the photo, some message, either personal, artistic, or even merely information-based, is communicated. This will also define how we consume the content. A platform like Twitter, which has a character limit, encourages quick and concise exchanges that often emphasize brief opinions or statements while other platforms may demand longer and more thoughtful posts, which lead to deeper and more reflective content.
Exercises
The combination of platforms and mediums influences the type of communication that is going to occur and shapes the culture of interaction. For example, a post on Facebook can combine text and images in order to convey a message, while platforms like WhatsApp are more about immediate, short-form communication that relies on text or voice messages.
Why Does It Matter?
Understanding the difference between mediums and platforms is crucial for communication in today’s world, especially with increasing digitalization. The selection of medium and platform to convey a certain message could elevate the way it would be received and perceived. For instance, formal business communication may be best suited to e-mail, a text-based medium, while visual products or casual interactions may be better served by platforms such as Instagram or Snapchat. In an academic or professional context, knowing when to use email versus when to use video calling platforms such as Zoom can enhance the quality of the communication and make certain that the message is appropriate for the circumstance.
Exercises
The ability to choose among a medium and platform for choosing the right combination may also condition the message. A more formal platform like email can make people view things as professional; whereas, in most cases, Twitter is viewed as casual or conversational. Knowing such differences may ensure that the right message gets across to the right audience in the right way.
Challenges in Media
While digital platforms and mediums provide new opportunities for communication, they also introduce unique challenges. One common issue is the risk of miscommunication. On platforms that rely heavily on text, such as Twitter or email, tone and context can often be misunderstood, leading to confusion or unintended consequences. Additionally, the constant connectedness of digital platforms gives rise to information overload. Between notifications that ping and streams of information to scroll through, sometimes it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the plethora of information.
Exercises
Another challenge to consider is the speed at which people communicate, like on Snapchat or Twitter, can minimize time for reflective thought. A message may be sent out before there is full consideration of its impact. Speed and immediacy have real values, but they sometimes work against the depth of communication, especially when the topic is significant or sensitive.
Conclusion
As we continue to emerge ourselves deeper into digital media, it is important to understand the relationship between mediums and platforms. Every message you will send or receive is impacted and influenced by the medium through which it originally comes from and the platform from which it originates. With this understanding, choice can be made more accurately about how to communicate making sure messages are clear and effective and proper for where it is intended to go. In the future, with new technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence continuing to evolve, the role of platforms and mediums in communication will likely expand and change. As digital communication tools continue to evolve, so too will the ways in which we use them to interact with the world.
